design, create and deliver considered, responsive & contextual architecture; buildings, places & communities for all.

We commenced our involvement in this exciting conversion and refurbishment of a 3-storey former Regency workshop, located in a small mews behind the iconic Grade II* Regency Square on Brighton seafront, into a four-bedroom family home in January 2019. Due to the challenges associated with the COVID 19 Pandemic, Brexit and the ongoing economic challenges, works on site were eventually completed in July 2022.

RIBA Stages 2-5.

The brief was simple; every piece of the existing building had to be reused in the new. Old timber glass cutting tables were carefully taken apart and made into kitchen joinery, roof joists cut into battens and used to line the inside of the new roof and instead of ripping out and replacing the existing floor construction to create additional headroom (below the roof structure) for the new living space at second floor, the timber second floor structure was lowered in one piece by 600mm onto a new steel structure.

Our client’s passion and hands-on approach for honest conservation and reuse has resulted in a truly wonderful building of character. The trials and tribulations of completing this project were featured on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Remarkable Renovations (20th July 2022) and can be viewed on All 4 on-demand TV.
