Following it’s closure, the Ex-Tavistock & Summerhill Preparatory School in Lindfield, was demolished comprehensively in 2017, the aim to seek planning consent to provide much needed residential accommodation in the form of houses and apartments on the site.
The project proposes 38 dwellings with a sensitive and contextual design response which seeks to open the site up with views across and through, whilst maintaining a neighbourly approach to built form in proximity to the shared boundaries and local houses. The site has been treated as a parkland setting and thus is an integration of landscape and buildings which complement the setting, acknowledge and work with the existing mature trees, many with Tree Preservation Orders, and root protection zones whilst proposing a design of high quality that will enhance the area.
The proposals for Tavistock Park comprises of four clusters of built form, three apartment blocks and one row of four houses. Materials have been selected to reflect locality with brickwork and timber clad elevations which respond to the natural elements on site.
There are a number of challenges with the site which is inward looking and has very limited contextual relationship or historic reference to the surrounding urban grain, with a wide mix of built form and limited cohesion both on the site and with it’s local surroundings.
The thrust of the current proposals seek to reinforce the parkland setting and provide a sensitive landscape-led residential development with simple and beautiful buildings bringing together high quality contemporary detailing and traditional materials.
The scheme is currently awaiting a planning decision.
